Picky Eaters

Some children will eat everything put in front of them, while others have a more picky palate. Celebrity tips about how to make food “fun” and “cute” are NOT the solution. It ends up being more work for a parent, and is a very unhealthy approach to meal time for your child. The goal is to simplify, be consistent, and do not stress—your child will not starve.

Here are some goals for the parent of a picky eater:

  1. Provide a choice of three options (carb, veg, and protein). They can have as much as they want of any one option, but they do not get a fourth choice that leaves you running to the fridge.

  2. Do not make food or desert a reward, or consider eating as “good behavior.” Food should never be a reward nor a negotiation point.

  3. Texture can be an issue for some children. If you sense that your child is sensitive to the texture of their food, change it up. However, do not revert to purees.

  4. Pasta: Many picky eaters rely solely on pasta for dinner and/or lunch. Make sure to add meat or veggies.

  5. Snacks: Make sure you provide high protein/healthy snacks and do not call them “treats.”

  6. Drinks: Stick to water.

  7. Fruit: If your child isn’t a big fruit eater, try making a smoothie! You can add milk or yogurt for nutritional value.

Although it can be difficult, the most important thing is to be patient with your child. Being picky with food is a normal stage in a growing child’s development. If you are nervous about your child’s diet, don’t hesitate to reach out to their pediatrician.
